Summer Sounds

This week our class poem is called 'Summer'. It mentions the sounds of summer so we have been listening and listing the sounds of summer we have heard or know...

Bees
Flies
Crickets
Mosquitos
Cicadas

Today we went on a special treasure hunt and discovered a 'cicada garden' at NWS.

Look at what we found!

A total of 45 cicada shells.

Here is our shared story we wrote as a class, after we had collected our 'treasures'.

We went to the cicada garden.  We found forty five cicada shells.  It was fun looking for them.

Can you hear any other summer sounds at home?

Swimming Carnival

What a wonderfully high level of participation we had today in our Year 1 and 2 classes swimming carnival.
The children enjoyed a range of activities and some free time swimming with their friends and pool toys.
Here are some pictures of our keen Room 14 swimmers.

Remember lunchtime swims are available each week.  Monday's for Year 1 and Tuesday's for Year  2 students.
It's a great opportunity to develop confidence in the water and practise swimming skills.

Welcome to the Class of 2016!

What a great start we have had to the year in Room 14.  We are getting to know each other and learn the class routines that will enable optimum learning.

What a wonderful group we are.

Our challenge this week is to have every child bring and wear a sun hat. Parents please help your child to remember to pack one everyday.

A big welcome to Ms Martelli (pictured above) who will be spending time with us through out the year. She is visiting us as part of her studies with the University of Auckland.

Fun Day

What fun we had yesterday!
We did relays with stilts and egg and spoons. Then we played on the big blow up obstacle course.  Water play in the sandpit was a highlight. There was a fun swim in the pool and Lego building too.  Here a a few pictures.

Scooter Safety in Action

We have been learning about being safe while using our scooters. We have learnt the importance of wearing a helmet and ensuring it fits correctly and tightly to our head and chin.

While using our scooters we have learnt that riding in the middle of the path, rather than on the curb side is safest.  We know the importance of watching out for cars on 'sneaky' driveways and walking our scooters across roads when we are crossing.

Please remind us of our learning and talk to us often, about these important aspects of scooter safety as we scoot about so that this learning becomes embedded in our everyday lives.

Cello Music

Thank you to  Mrs Brown, David's Mum for sharing her cello playing with our class in the last week of term 3.
Mrs Brown played some music for us on her very old cello. It is about two hundred years old!
We enjoyed hearing the different songs and the sounds of each note when played one at a time.
The children then had turns at plucking the strings on the cello.

πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€Thank you Mrs Brown for sharing with us and giving us a wonderful learning opportunity to make sounds on your beautiful big cello. We loved the really low and high notes.
