Cyclone Disaster Appeal

Our topic for health this term is focusing on natural disasters and being prepared.  The events of the devastating Cyclone that recently hit Fiji provides us with an opportunity to look at how we can respond globally to disasters.  What can we do to help others?

Over the next three weeks we are having an appeal for donations which will be shipped shortly to Fiji by local charity groups.

Can you help?

Unless someone like you care a whole awful lot.  Nothing is going to get better it's NOT.
 Dr Suess

Please send donations of non perishable food items, school stationery supplies and bedding/linen to Room 14 or the school office.

Do you know about the devastating impact of the cyclone?  If not, here's some links to get you started on your research.

Ollie's great question

"How do cicadas climb out of their shells?" Asked Ollie.
"That's a great question 0llie" I replied.  "Let's find out."

This is what we discovered.

A warning from Buster "It's a bit creepy."

What do you think?

Writing time - Baby Sloths have a bath

What is Mrs Chester's favourite animal?

Today we watched a little clip and found out she loves sloths.  In the video, the baby sloths were being given baths by the people caring for them.

Sloths bathtime

We talked about what we saw.  Many of us thought it was very funny.  We used what we saw and what we talked about to prepare for writing.

Here is a photo of us sitting outside Room 23 where we found the Hibiscus flowers that we learned are like 'chocolate' to sloths. The sloths were given one each after having their 'green leaf tea' bath.

Summer Sounds

This week our class poem is called 'Summer'. It mentions the sounds of summer so we have been listening and listing the sounds of summer we have heard or know...

Bees
Flies
Crickets
Mosquitos
Cicadas

Today we went on a special treasure hunt and discovered a 'cicada garden' at NWS.

Look at what we found!

A total of 45 cicada shells.

Here is our shared story we wrote as a class, after we had collected our 'treasures'.

We went to the cicada garden.  We found forty five cicada shells.  It was fun looking for them.

Can you hear any other summer sounds at home?

Swimming Carnival

What a wonderfully high level of participation we had today in our Year 1 and 2 classes swimming carnival.
The children enjoyed a range of activities and some free time swimming with their friends and pool toys.
Here are some pictures of our keen Room 14 swimmers.

Remember lunchtime swims are available each week.  Monday's for Year 1 and Tuesday's for Year  2 students.
It's a great opportunity to develop confidence in the water and practise swimming skills.

Welcome to the Class of 2016!

What a great start we have had to the year in Room 14.  We are getting to know each other and learn the class routines that will enable optimum learning.

What a wonderful group we are.

Our challenge this week is to have every child bring and wear a sun hat. Parents please help your child to remember to pack one everyday.

A big welcome to Ms Martelli (pictured above) who will be spending time with us through out the year. She is visiting us as part of her studies with the University of Auckland.
